How it started
A true split, and one of the best documented in the state. Olympus opened September 1, 1953 with 1,028 students. In the fall of 1960 it enrolled the largest sophomore class in Utah history, and Skyline was built a mile east in 1962 to take the overflow. The campuses sit about six blocks apart in Millcreek, and the boundary runs between close neighbors.
The trophy
A football-shaped piece of granite. Where it came from is genuinely disputed and all three versions are lore, not record: that it was carried down off Mount Olympus in 1962 before the schools' first meeting; that the two head coaches hiked the mountain together and brought it down themselves; or that it came out of the excavation for Skyline's foundation that same year. KSL notes that coaches on both sides have embellished it. The winner repaints it in its own colors — Olympus does it green and silver at a school assembly — and keeps it in the trophy case.
The games that made it
Olympus won 27-7 on October 15, 2021 to keep the Rock a fourth straight year, in the season Skyline opened a new stadium. Skyline's student paper still tells the one where an undefeated Skyline team lost on an Olympus touchdown in the last ten seconds of a tied fourth quarter. Skyline reclaimed the Rock in 2026, winning 21-16.
