How it started
Northridge High opened in Layton in the fall of 1992 as a Davis School District comprehensive high school, with a boundary that takes in on-post housing at Hill Air Force Base. The series starts there — 35 meetings is consistent with a 1992 or 1993 first game. Whether Northridge's boundary was carved directly out of Layton High's is the obvious assumption but is not documented in any source we could find, so we don't state it as fact.
The trophy
A sword — chosen because it fits both mascots at once, Northridge's Knight and Layton's Lancer. The year it was introduced is not documented.
The games that made it
August 29, 2025: Layton 21, Northridge 17, erasing a ten-point third-quarter hole. The game turned on a disputed sequence in which an inadvertent whistle wiped out a play and Northridge converted a field goal instead. It was Layton coach Trevor Thomas's first win over Northridge in three tries. Layton took the 2026 meeting 30-0.
Traditions
Kids on both sides grow up together through little league and junior high and then get split by the boundary. Layton's coach on the game: "Records get thrown out the window." Thomas in 2025: "If they're going to make it a big deal, we're just going to make it a bigger deal."
Where it stands
Now played as a Week 1 or Week 2 non-region opener rather than a region game.
On the record
A separately published figure has 10–24 (Standard-Examiner, 2025-08-29). The two figures are not blended. Reported entering the 2025 game; Layton has won 2025 and 2026 since.
