Cyprus vs Tooele Football Rivalry
Battle of the Oquirrhs (name unconfirmed) · 50 meetings · Strong
Cyprus leads 27–22–1 — 50 meetings since 1950 on record. The geography is real and it is a good story: Cyprus is in Magna on the east side of the Oquirrh Mountains, Tooele sits in Tooele Valley on the west side, and both towns were built by the same mining and smelting economy — Kennecott's Bingham Canyon pit and the Garfield and Tooele smelters.
How it started
The geography is real and it is a good story: Cyprus is in Magna on the east side of the Oquirrh Mountains, Tooele sits in Tooele Valley on the west side, and both towns were built by the same mining and smelting economy — Kennecott's Bingham Canyon pit and the Garfield and Tooele smelters. But no published source states that as the origin of the football rivalry, and the phrase 'Battle of the Oquirrhs' returns nothing in Deseret News, KSL or the Tooele Transcript Bulletin. Deseret's game database has meetings going back to at least October 4, 1974, so the series is at least a half-century old.
The games that made it
No meeting has been written up in a way that survives in the accessible record. The Tooele Transcript Bulletin has a recap of a 44-14 Cyprus season-opening win, but the year did not come through cleanly and we have not published the score against a date. Cyprus leads the series 27-22-1.
Where it stands
Currently an August non-region opener. The two schools schedule each other even when reclassification splits them up.
On the record
The series record above begins in 1950, which is as far back as the published game database reaches. These two were playing before that, so the figure is a floor rather than the whole series.
What we could not find
Whether 'Battle of the Oquirrhs' is established local usage or a coinage. First year played. Any trophy. Every defining game. This is the one rivalry on the site closest to home, so it is worth getting right from inside the program rather than off the web.
