Cedar vs Dixie Football Rivalry
97 meetings · Marquee
Dixie leads 62–35 — 97 meetings since 1950 on record. The best-documented origin in the state.
How it started
The best-documented origin in the state. The two first met on September 25, 1925 in St. George, and Dixie won 33-0. State prep historian George Felt calls it the second-oldest rivalry in Utah, behind only Box Elder-Bear River. They began meeting every year in 1949, and the 2025 game was the 76th consecutive renewal. It is Iron County against Washington County — the two population centers of southern Utah, about fifty miles apart — and it has never needed a trophy or a nickname.
The games that made it
The two met in the 3A playoffs in 1998. On August 29, 2025, in the 97th meeting, Cedar stunned Dixie 16-13 on late scores. Cedar City is by a wide margin Dixie's most-played opponent — 97 games, with the next closest at 74 — and there has never been a tie in the series.
Traditions
Played at Walt Brooks Stadium in St. George in Dixie's home years.
Where it stands
Both are Region 9 schools and the game has been played every year since 1949 — one of only two rivalries on this list with an unbroken modern run.
On the record
A separately published figure has 34–62 (St. George News, 2025-08-29). The two figures are not blended. Reported entering the 97th meeting; Cedar won that game.
What we could not find
Why the schools didn't play annually between 1925 and 1949. Memorable games between 1949 and 1998. Longest winning streaks. George Felt is a named, citable Utah prep historian and is worth contacting directly about this one.
