Ben Lomond vs Ogden Football Rivalry
Iron Horse Game · 78 meetings · Marquee
Ogden leads 55–23 — 78 meetings since 1950. First contested in 1953, the same year the trophy was made.
How it started
First contested in 1953, the same year the trophy was made. The name is Ogden's own history: the city was the junction where the transcontinental lines met, and 'iron horse' was the nineteenth-century word for a locomotive. Ben Lomond is Ogden's most-played opponent and Ogden is Ben Lomond's — no other pairing in the city comes close.
The trophy
Two locomotives meeting head to head on a length of track, one engine painted in each school's colors. The original ran out of engraving room by the mid-1970s; a second was built in 1976, painted by student body officers from both schools — Ben Lomond's engine by Dale Wilkinson, who later came back as the school's principal. By 2014 the trophy had not sat in Ben Lomond's case since 2007.
The games that made it
Ben Lomond ended a seven-year drought in the series on September 26, 2014. In 2023 the Scots beat Ogden for the first time since 2016 and clinched their first winning season since 2000. The 2025 meeting was played days after a Ben Lomond student was shot and killed; Ogden won 37-6, and before kickoff both teams linked arms at midfield for a moment of silence.
Traditions
Ben Lomond's athletic director has said the game outsells every other sporting event at the school combined. From 2015 the game was staged at Weber State's Stewart Stadium, though the 2025 meeting was played on Ben Lomond's own field.
Where it stands
Still annual, usually the regular-season finale.
What we could not find
Whether Ben Lomond was built as a split from Ogden High is not documented anywhere we could find. The Standard-Examiner's game numbering is internally inconsistent — it called 2021 the 69th and 2023 the 71st, both consistent with a 1953 start, then called 2025 the 78th, which is not. We have not repeated the 78th figure.
